"I am a better Muslim woman because of the presence of the League, in that it is a constant reminder to me that I must do and be my best, not just for myself but for my sisters all over the world. If the League can do it, then I too can do it."

The International League
of Muslim Women, Inc. is a non-profit organization founded in 1981 by
seven concerned sisters who wanted to help meet the needs of the inner
and outer community. Their desire was also to create and maintain an organization
based on Islamic tenets.
The purpose of this organization is to serve the needs of individuals
and/or families; assist in counseling and guidance; provide shelter, food
and clothing to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
The original and current goals include fostering, encouraging and promoting
a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of the entire community.
And to articulate the legitimate needs of Muslims world-wide on matters
of mutual concern.
We serve as a pathway to services and support for parents and children.
These connections will automatically assist families, help them to see
opportunities instead of obstacles resulting in enrichment of the community
as a whole.
Since its founding and in keeping with this mission, the League of Muslim
Women, Inc. has:
- Provided food, shelter, clothing and monies to needy individuals,
families and groups through self-generated funds.
- Provided wholesome educational and recreational activities to the
community-at-large.
- Served as host families as part of the Foreign Student Exchange Program.
- Established and maintained The Muslim Pioneer House (a home for senior
citizens).
- Established a non-profit Resale Shop.
- Established The An-Nisa House (a home for battered women).
- Organized and implement an annual Coat Give-Away Project.
- Established a Fruit Basket Distribution Program, Food Bank, and Food
Co-op.
- Established the Junior League of Muslim Women.
- The League of Muslim Women, Inc. promotes unity, and inspires a sense
of security among women, while striving to promote healthy, progressive
life in our communities.
- We can accomplish our mission by utilizing individual and collective
potentials, striving to create a better place for our families.
The League of Muslim Women, Inc. promotes unity, inspiration and a sense
of security among women, while striving to promote a healthy, progressive
life in our communities. We can accomplish our mission by utilizing individual
and collective potentials, striving to
create a better place for our families.
From humble beginnings, we have identified the need, located, purchased
and renovated the first Muslim home for seniors. Our Pioneer House in
Detroit became a reality through the steadfast efforts of League founders,
members and volunteers. It has been funded
through many fundraising events, pledges and donations.
There have been numerous auctions, dinners, skating parties, and plays
sponsored to enable the establishment of emergency shelter for the homeless
and battered women. And, to establish and maintain educational and recreational
programs.
The League now has grown to included over 23 chapters nationally and 3
internationally. New chapters are established on a regular basis, currently
in Alaska and West Africa.
These chapters have adopted programs established by Headquarters (Detroit)
and have developed programs unique to their areas. For example, the Buffalo
Chapter has initiated the Bonding Series Programs for women and youth
in an interfaith community forum and acted as a liaison for refugees in
schools, clinics and social service agencies to expedite their acclimation
to the new American culture. The Birmingham, Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles,
Norfolk and Memphis Chapters have worked with battered, incarcerated,
mentally ill and homeless women and have established social outreach programs
that have been highly effective and of great benefit to their respective
communities.
The International League of Muslim Women is made up of sisters who care
and are concerned about others. Allah has blessed us to carve a pathway
to services and support for parents and children. When resources are needed
there are connections and linkages which
have been made through the efforts of hard working sisters. We work through
Education, Public Relations, Social Service, Research, Fundraising, and
Cultural Critique Committees and recently established Property Management
and Proposal Writing Committees. We are now working to increase the number
of adoptive and foster homes for children, to establish a culturally specific
social service agency, establish a house for young mothers and their children
and to establish chapters in every city throughout the world.
If it is the will of Allah, and in keeping with our creed we shall continue
to work in the spirit of unity, collective work and responsibility, self-determination,
creativity and faith.
We are grateful for the opportunity to work to benefit humanity and we
ask for your support and prayers that we may continue.
